Recruiting For The Right Fit.

Updated: Jun 17, 2020

How do you find the right person for the job? Is it simply the best combination of skills and past experience, and how do you know it's what your company needs?

Let's face it, interviewing for most companies is about gut feeling and rapport. A candidate who connects with the interviewers and gives good responses to the questions being asked seems like a good hire, but you don't know for sure if they will be successful on the job or if they are the right fit for your needs.

A bad hire is expensive. The longer it takes to determine someone isn't right for the job the more costly. Typically it takes 2-3 months to get up to speed at a new job, and sometimes longer. If you have to start the hiring process over 6 months in, and it takes you 2-3 months to recruit and on-board a new employee, you just wasted an entire year or more getting someone up to speed and performing at where you need them to be. That's an expensive mistake!

So how can recruitment and interviewing be more systematic? Assessing a candidate is the place to start. The more time you spend evaluating a candidate the higher the likelihood of

success. Time isn't the only factor, and the way you engage and the questions you ask a candidate is crucial to making a good hiring decision.

Here at East Bay HR Professionals we use the behavioral based interviewing model in our approach to recruitment. Simply put the behavioral based interviewing model centers around the principal that past behavior is the best predictor of future performance. The method focuses on collecting complete information from candidates with a structured process for follow up questions. Interview questions are then pre-designed to uncover real world examples of past performance related to the crucial functions of the job. It is through this lens that we can learn how a candidate will most likely behave on the job. As an added bonus, the techniques of behavioral based interviewing also tend to create an atmosphere that naturally put a candidate at ease, which then leads to more robust dialogue.

This relaxed atmosphere and engaged process can help you and your job candidates uncover crucial and pertinent information that may or may not have been shared using traditional interview questions and techniques.
